Ulcers, Lip and Cheek Irritation

Ulcers

Some patients are susceptible to mouth ulcers. One or more areas of ulceration may appear on the cheeks, lips or tongue. Quick relief can be obtained by applying a small amount of topical anesthetic (Orabase or Ora-Gel) directly to the ulcerated area with a cotton swab.

Lips and Cheek Irritation

New appliances can sometimes be irritating to the mouth (soft tissue, cheeks, lips), especially when the patient is eating. Orthodontic wax will help control this discomfort. Tear off an amount the size of a pea and roll it between your fingers to make a small ball. Then, flatten the ball and cover the whole part that is causing the irritation. Now you can eat more comfortably. The wax can be swallowed without danger.
